Salsa - An Overview
Salsa is a Latin street dance that originated in the Afro-Caribbean
and became popularized in the United States when emigrants from
Cuba and Puerto Rico fled to Spanish Harlem, New York due to social
and economic pressures. The dance is danced by 2 people (a leader
and a follower) to a salsa beat with an 8-beat measure. At Attitude
Dance Studio (ADS), we teach Cross Body Style salsa (which literally
means the leader sends the lady across his body when executing
fancy dance patterns).
This differs from:
Ballroom Salsa: Ballroom Salsa is very much a
monogamous dance. This means you have only one partner as you
learn choreographed turn patterns. Hence, it is not very practical
socially, because when you go to a club and meet another salsera
or salsero (who is not your dance partner), you may not be able
to follow or lead him or her through these dance patterns. Typically,
ballroom salsa dancers have a formalized, disciplined posture,
with more tricks and dips in their dance routine.
and;
Cuban Style (or South American Style) Salsa:
A very fun way to Salsa with limited turn patterns and very few
spins. The emphasis is on subtle pelvic weight shifts and circular,
flowing movements where you move around each other (and never
cross the body of your partner during your dance routines). Your
basic step is a diagonal back step with each foot. If you learn
Cross Body Style Salsa, you will be able to adapt to Cuban Style
Salsa with little difficulty.
